Early Life

Aloysio de Andrade Faria was born in November 1920. His hometown was Belo Horizonte, located in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Career and Business

Aloysio de Andrade Faria first studied to become a pediatrician, which is a children's doctor. However, he also had a strong interest in the banking business. His father, Clemente de Faria, was already involved in finance.

In 1949, Aloysio took over his father's bank, called Banco da Lavoura. He worked hard to make it one of Brazil's most successful banks. It later became known as Banco Real.

Later, in the late 1900s, Banco Real sold most of its business to a bank from the Netherlands called ABN AMRO Bank. But Aloysio de Andrade Faria kept other parts of the Real Group, like their insurance company (Seguros Real) and their leasing company (Real Leasing Co.).

Aloysio did not stop working in the financial world. He started a new bank called Alfa Bank in New York. This bank became one of the ten largest and most successful banks in Brazil.

Besides banking, Faria also owned one of the biggest Guarana farms in the world. He also owned the Transamerica Corporation, which included a hotel and media companies. Even with all his success, he liked to live a simple life. He was known for driving an old Mercedes-Benz car from the 1960s.

In March 2020, the magazine Forbes estimated that he was worth about US$1.7 billion.

Death

Aloysio de Andrade Faria passed away on September 15, 2020. He was 99 years old.
