Aloysius Jin Luxian (simplified Chinese: 金鲁贤; traditional Chinese: 金魯賢; pinyin: Jīn Lǔxián; June 20, 1916 – April 27, 2013) was an important Chinese Catholic leader. He was a Jesuit priest and later became the Bishop of Shanghai. He dedicated his life to serving the Catholic community in China.

Life Story of Bishop Jin

Early Life and Education

Aloysius Jin was born in Shanghai, China, on June 20, 1916. His family had been Catholic for many generations. Sadly, he became an orphan at a young age. He lost his mother when he was 10 years old and his father when he was 14.

He went to Catholic schools for his education. In 1938, when he was 22, he joined the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. This is a religious group of priests and brothers in the Catholic Church. He was made a priest in 1946. After that, he traveled to study in France, Germany, and Italy. He returned to China in 1951.

Challenges and Leadership

In 1955, Aloysius Jin was arrested along with many other priests and Catholic followers. This happened during a time when the government was very strict with religious groups. He was held in prison for many years.

He was finally released from prison in 1982. After his release, he helped start a new school for training priests. This school was called the Sheshan Major Seminary, located near Shanghai. He became the first leader, or rector, of this important seminary.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1985, Bishop Jin was made an auxiliary bishop. An auxiliary bishop is a helper to the main bishop. In 1988, he became the main bishop for the Catholic area of Shanghai. He served in this role until he passed away in 2013.

For some time, the Holy See (the central government of the Catholic Church led by the Pope) did not officially approve his position. However, in 2005, the Holy See officially recognized him. He was then known as an Apostolic Administrator, which meant he helped manage the diocese for the Pope.

Bishop Jin's life showed great dedication to his faith and his community, even through difficult times.
