The Alpha Delta Pi Sorority House is a historic building located at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in Urbana, Illinois. It was built in 1926. This house was made for the university's Sigma chapter of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. A sorority is a social organization for women in college. The Alpha Delta Pi chapter at the University of Illinois started in 1912.

What Makes This House Special?

The Alpha Delta Pi Sorority House was designed by the architecture firm of William H. Clare and Alban E. Coen. They were from Berwyn, Illinois. They designed the house in a style called French Eclectic. This style became very popular in the 1920s. Many soldiers returning from World War I had seen French cottages. This inspired new home designs in America.

A Look at its Unique Style

The French Eclectic style has several key features. You can see these features in the sorority house:

  • Asymmetrical massing: This means the building is not perfectly balanced on both sides. One side might look different from the other.
  • Steep slate hip roof: The roof is very sloped. It has four sides that meet at the top. It is covered with slate tiles.
  • Multiple dormers: These are windows that stick out from the sloped roof.
  • Limestone quoins: These are decorative blocks of stone. They are placed at the corners of the building.
  • String course: This is a horizontal band of stone. It runs along the outside of the building.
  • Bay windows: These windows stick out from the main wall of the house. They create a small alcove inside.
  • Arched corner entryway: The main entrance is rounded at the top. It is located at a corner of the building.

Why is it Historic?

The Alpha Delta Pi Sorority House is considered very important. It shows a great example of French Eclectic architecture. Because of its special design and history, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 8, 2000. The National Register of Historic Places is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect the building.
