Alquife is a small town in Spain. It is located in the province of Granada. A province is like a large region or state within a country. In 2018, about 624 people lived there.
Alquife is very famous for its iron mines. These mines have been important since the time of Ancient Rome. They brought a lot of wealth and jobs to the area.
The Famous Iron Mines
Alquife's history is closely tied to its iron mines. These mines have been used for a very long time. People mined iron here even in Ancient Roman times. The iron from these mines helped the area become rich.
The Mining Community
Because of the mines, a special community was built. This was a mining community. It was a place where the miners and their families lived. It was built right next to the mines.
In February 1997, the company running the mines closed them down. This company was called Compañía Andaluza de Minas. All 264 workers lost their jobs. The mining community became empty after the mines closed.
Future of the Mines
Today, the mining community is abandoned. However, there are plans to reopen the mines. As of August 2020, people were working to get them ready again. If the mines reopen, they could bring new jobs and life back to Alquife.
