Alta is a small, unincorporated community located in Peoria County, Illinois, United States. It sits on the northwest edge of the city of Peoria. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
Alta is about 8 miles (13 km) north-northwest of downtown Peoria. The old Illinois State Route 174 goes through Alta. Also, the popular Rock Island Trail starts right here in Alta.

Alta was officially started in 1873. This happened when the railroad lines were extended to reach this area. The community got its name because it is located on a high piece of land. "Alta" means "high" in some languages.
A post office was opened in Alta in 1873. This post office served the community for many years. It continued to operate until the 1970s, helping people send and receive mail.
