Altamont is a small, unincorporated community. It is located in Alameda County, California. You can find it about 7.5 miles (12 km) northeast of Livermore. This community sits high up at 741 feet (226 meters) in the Altamont Pass. The area was first called The Summit. Its name changed to Altamont when the Central Pacific Railroad arrived in 1869.

The name "Altamont" has an interesting origin. It comes from "Alta Monte," which is a Spanish phrase. "Alta Monte" means "High Mountain." This name makes sense because Altamont is located at a high elevation. For a short time, the community was also known as The Summit. This earlier name also described its high location.

Altamont's Post Office

A local post office served the Altamont community for many years. It first opened its doors in 1872. The post office continued to operate until 1955. It played an important role in helping people send and receive mail in the area.
