Altoga is a small community in Collin County, Texas. It is an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own city government. Altoga is located within the large Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area. In the year 2000, about 367 people lived there.

The Story of Altoga

Altoga has an interesting past! A person named Dock Owensby wanted the community to have a special saying. He suggested "all together," which might be how the name "Altoga" came to be.

Back in 1910, Altoga was a busy place. It had seven stores where people could buy things. There were also two cotton gins, which are machines used to separate cotton fibers. The community even had its own brass band!

A post office opened in Altoga in 1889. It helped people send and receive mail for many years, closing in 1937. There's some discussion about how many people lived in Altoga in 1915, either 50 or 133. The population grew to 250 by 1929. However, it later dropped to 150 in 1941. By 1937, only four businesses were left.

The number of people living in Altoga went down to just 50 in 1970. But then, because nearby McKinney started to grow, Altoga's population increased again. It jumped to 358 people in 1980. From 1990 through 2000, the population stayed around 367.

Where is Altoga?

Altoga is located in the northeastern part of Collin County. You can find it on Farm to Market Road 1827. It is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northeast of the city of McKinney.
