Where is Altoona?
Altoona is located in the northeastern part of Lake County. You can find it at these coordinates: 28°57′57″N 81°38′54″W / 28.96583°N 81.64833°W.
Roads and Nearby Cities
Florida State Road 19 goes right through the middle of Altoona. If you drive south on SR 19, it's about 8 miles (13 km) to Eustis. It's about 14 miles (23 km) to Tavares, which is the main city for Lake County. If you go north on SR 19, you'll enter the Ocala National Forest. It's about 55 miles (89 km) to Palatka from there.
Altoona's Size
The Altoona CDP covers a total area of about 0.47 square miles (1.23 square kilometers). A small part of this area, about 0.02 square miles (0.06 square kilometers), is water.
Altoona's History
The name "Altoona" might have come from two different places. One idea is that it was named after Allatoona, Georgia. This was the hometown of Thomas Jefferson Hinson. Another idea is that it was named after Altoona, Pennsylvania. This was the hometown of Augustus Gottschee, who was the first merchant in Altoona.
Altoona officially became a town on February 12, 1887. However, it stopped being a town on May 27, 1899. This happened after a big fire destroyed most of its buildings. The fire made it very hard for the town to collect taxes, so it could no longer operate as a municipality.
