Alum Creek is a small, unincorporated community in Bastrop County, Texas. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. In 2000, about 70 people lived there. It is located within the larger Greater Austin area.

History of Alum Creek
Alum Creek was started in 1829, making it one of the oldest communities in Bastrop County. Early families built a fort there to protect themselves. This fort was near the creek that the community is named after.
Early Growth and Development
As more families moved in, they built cabins and farms. By 1846, the community had grown enough to set aside land for a campground and a meetinghouse. A post office opened in Alum Creek in 1851. It stayed open for many years until 1898.
In 1884, Alum Creek was a busy place with about 200 people. It had three mills, two general stores, a blacksmith, and a saloon. This period of growth didn't last long. By 1896, the population dropped to only 40 people.
Alum Creek in the 20th Century
The community didn't have enough people to be counted in official population surveys during the 1900s. In the 1930s, there was a community club. By the mid-1980s, Alum Creek mostly had scattered homes and antique shops. The population was 70 people in 2000.
Alum Creek Today
Today, Alum Creek has a few businesses. These include "A Place For Your Stuff," which makes portable buildings, and a store called "Clutterbugs."

Alum Creek is located about 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast of Bastrop. You can find it where Texas State Highway 71 crosses Alum Creek.
Education in Alum Creek
A private school was started in Alum Creek in 1835. It taught students until 1937. Today, students from the community attend schools in the Smithville Independent School District.
