Playing Career
Alvarito was born in Ujo, a town in Spain. He started playing football for local clubs in his home region of Asturias. In 1955, he became a professional player. He spent two seasons with Real Oviedo in the Segunda División (Spain's second-highest league).
Time at Atlético Madrid
In 1957, Alvarito joined Atlético Madrid, a big team in La Liga (Spain's top football league). He played for Atlético Madrid for six years. During this time, his team won the Copa del Rey (a major Spanish cup competition) two times in a row. They won both finals against their rivals, Real Madrid.
Alvarito often played as a backup defender. Back then, teams could not use substitute players during a match. This meant players usually played the whole game. He also had an injury to his leg bones (tibia and fibula) during a game.
Later Clubs
Alvarito's last season in Spain's top league was in 1963–64. He played for Real Murcia and scored his only goal in La Liga. This goal helped his team win 1–0 against his old team, Oviedo.
After playing in Spain, Alvarito also played football in other countries. He played in the Republic of Ireland, Canada, and the United States. For a short time, he returned to Spain to play for Córdoba CF. He even worked as a player-coach for Shelbourne in Ireland. Alvarito stopped playing football in 1970 when he was 34 years old.
Managerial Career
After retiring as a player, Alvarito became a football manager. He managed several teams, mostly in Spain's lower divisions.
International Matches
Alvarito played two games for the Spanish national team in July 1960. Both games were friendly matches played away from home.
- On July 14, he played his first game, which Spain won 4–0 against Chile.
- Ten days later, he played in a game where Spain lost 0–2 to Argentina.
Death
Alvarito passed away on June 16, 2018, in Huércal-Overa, Spain. He was 82 years old.
