A Look Back: Alvord's Story
Alvord was first called Nina. But in 1882, its name changed to Alvord. This was to honor the president of the Fort Worth and Denver Railway, a big train company. A post office opened in Alvord in 1882.
By 1890, Alvord had become a busy place where farmers could buy and sell goods. In 1925, the town had 1,376 residents. It also had a high school, an elementary school, four churches, and its own weekly newspaper. The Burlington Northern Railroad, a major train line, used to stop there.
The number of people living in Alvord went down during the Great Depression. This was a time in the 1930s when many people lost their jobs and money. It also happened because there were fewer watermelon farms and cattle ranches.

- By 1960, the population was 720, with 19 businesses.

Ernest O. Thompson was born in Alvord in 1892. He became a very important person in Texas. He was a commissioner for the Texas Railroad Commission. This group helps manage oil and gas in the state.
