About Alwyn Davey's Early Life

Alwyn Davey grew up in Darwin, Northern Territory. His family has Indigenous Australian roots. They are connected to the Kokatha people from South Australia. Alwyn's father passed away when Alwyn was only eight years old.

He started playing junior football in Darwin. Later, he moved to Adelaide to play semi-professional football. He joined the South Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL).

Alwyn first caught the eye of AFL scouts because of his brother. His brother, Aaron Davey, was already playing well for the Melbourne Football Club. In 2006, Alwyn trained with Melbourne. Many thought he would join his brother there.

However, Alwyn was 22 years old at the time. Most players are drafted at 18. This made him seem "old" for the national draft. But Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy was very interested in fast Indigenous players. Essendon picked Alwyn in the third round of the 2006 AFL Draft.

Alwyn Davey's AFL Career

Starting Strong in 2007

Alwyn Davey played his first AFL game in 2007. He made a big impact right away. He played in every game until Round 14. He was often one of Essendon's best players. This included a great game on ANZAC Day.

In his first five AFL games, he had five "Goal of the Year" nominations. Two of these were on ANZAC Day. Alwyn became famous for his amazing speed. He could run 20 metres in just 2.75 seconds. This was thought to be the fastest in the league!

He quickly became a fan favorite at Essendon. Fans gave him the nickname "Froggy" because of how he looked. Sadly, in Round 14, he broke his arm. This injury made him miss the rest of the 2007 season. Essendon's team struggled without him.

At the end of 2007, Alwyn won the AFL Army Award. This award goes to players who show bravery for their team. He won it for his effort against Hawthorn in Round 6.

Challenges and Return

In 2008, Alwyn faced another challenge. He injured his right knee during training. This meant he needed surgery. He had to miss the rest of the 2008 season. Even with the injury, he kept training hard.

He made a great return in 2009. His strong defensive play was a big help to Essendon. He even led the team in tackles that year.

End of His AFL Journey

In 2013, the Essendon Football Club announced that Alwyn Davey would not play for them in 2014. This meant his AFL career had come to an end.

Alwyn Davey's Family Life

Alwyn Davey has some famous family members. He and Aaron Davey are cousins with Gavin Wanganeen. Gavin is a Brownlow medallist, which is a very important award in AFL.

Alwyn was named after his father. Alwyn also has twin sons, Alwyn Jr and Jayden. Both of his sons were drafted by Essendon in the 2022 AFL draft. They joined the team under the "father-son rule." This rule allows teams to draft sons of former players.
