Alí Rodríguez Araque (born September 9, 1937 – died November 19, 2018) was an important Venezuelan politician, lawyer, and diplomat. He held many key jobs in the government of President Hugo Chávez.
He was the leader of a political party called Patria Para Todos, which means "Fatherland for All". He served as an advisor on oil, the head of OPEC, and the president of Venezuela's state oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). He was also the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Ambassador to Cuba. His last job was serving as Venezuela's Ambassador to Cuba from 2014 until he passed away in 2018.
His Life and Work
Alí Rodríguez Araque was born in Ejido, a town in the Mérida region of Venezuela. He studied law at the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas and became a lawyer in 1961. He also studied economics, focusing on oil. He wrote many books and papers about the energy industry.
In the 1960s and early 1970s, he was involved in a movement in Venezuela that sought big changes. He was known by the name "Commander Fausto" during this time. Later, when the government offered a way for people in these movements to join regular politics, he agreed. He was pardoned and then became a member of the National Congress.
When Hugo Chávez became president in 1999, Alí Rodríguez Araque was appointed as Venezuela's Minister of Energy. He held this position until 2000.
In 2000, he was chosen to be the Secretary-General of OPEC. OPEC is a group of countries that produce a lot of the world's oil. He led OPEC from January 2001 to July 2002.
After his time at OPEC, he became the president of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). This is Venezuela's national oil company. During a difficult time for the company, he made tough decisions, including letting go of many workers who were involved in a large protest in 2002-2003.
He stayed at PDVSA until November 2004. Then, President Chávez made him the foreign minister, which means he was in charge of Venezuela's relationships with other countries. On September 1, 2006, he became Venezuela's Ambassador to Cuba. Later, he also served as a Vice President for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela. In June 2008, he was appointed as the Minister of Finance. He passed away in Havana, Cuba, on November 19, 2018, when he was 81 years old.
