Américo Amorim was born in a town called Mozelos in 1934. He was the fifth of eight children in his family. His family was described as "modest," meaning they were not rich.
Américo Amorim's Business Career
Américo Amorim owned 50% of Corticeira Amorim. This company was started by his grandfather in 1870. Today, it is the largest producer of cork in the world. Cork is a material used for things like bottle stoppers and floor tiles. The company had sales of $650 million.
Amorim also invested in other areas, like finance and energy. In 2005, he helped create a bank in Angola called Banco Internacional de Credito (BIC). He did this with another businesswoman named Isabel dos Santos.
Later, in 2008, Banco BIC Portugal started operating in Lisbon. It had the same owners as the bank in Angola. In 2008, BIC Angola was the fourth largest bank in Angola. In 2014, Américo Amorim sold his share in BIC to Isabel dos Santos.
One of his biggest investments was an 18% share in Galp Energia. This is a large energy company. He was the chairman of Galp Energia until October 2016. He then gave control of his shares to his oldest daughter, Paula.

Américo Amorim was married to Maria Fernanda de Oliveira Ramos. They had three daughters, and one of them is named Paula. The family lived in a town called Grijó.
