Américo d'Oliveira dos Ramos is a well-known banker and politician from São Tomé and Príncipe. He has been the prime minister of São Tomé and Príncipe since January 12, 2025. Before becoming prime minister, he was the head of the country's Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe. He also worked for the Ministry of Finance.

About Américo Ramos
Early Life and Education
Américo Ramos was born in São Tomé and Príncipe. He traveled to Russia to study at Moscow State University. There, he earned a degree in economics. He studied at the university from 1989 to 1995.
Career in Finance
After finishing his studies, Ramos returned to São Tomé. He joined the Ministry of Finance in 1995. He started as a budget technician and worked there until 1998.
He then took on more important roles. From 1998 to 2000, he was the head of the spending department. He became head of the budget department from 2000 to 2001. After that, he was the budget director from 2001 to 2009. From 2009 to 2010, he served as the director of the treasury.
Becoming Minister of Finance
In 2010, Américo Ramos became the Minister of Finance for São Tomé. He held this important job until 2012. He was asked to be Minister of Finance again in 2014. He served in this role until 2018. In 2019, he became an economic advisor to President Evaristo de Carvalho.
Leading the Central Bank
In December 2022, Ramos was chosen to be the governor of the Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe. This is a very important position. The central bank helps manage the country's money and economy.
Appointment as Prime Minister
On January 6, 2025, President Carlos Vila Nova made a big decision. He ended the government led by Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada. The president said the government was not able to solve the country's problems. He asked the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) party to suggest new prime minister candidates.
On January 9, President Vila Nova first chose Ilza Amado Vaz to be the next prime minister. However, just three days later, on January 12, she decided to step down. After her resignation, the ADI party suggested Adelino Pereira for the role. But President Vila Nova chose Américo Ramos instead. He announced Ramos as the new prime minister on January 12, 2025.
