Political Journey
Evaristo Carvalho had a long career in politics. He was a member of a political group called the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) party.
Serving as Prime Minister
Carvalho first served as the prime minister of São Tomé and Príncipe. This was from July 7, 1994, to October 25, 1994. He took on this important role again later. His second term as prime minister was from September 26, 2001, to March 28, 2002. As prime minister, he was the head of the government.
Running for President
In 2011, Carvalho decided to run for president. At that time, he was the leader of the National Assembly. This is like the country's parliament. The current Prime Minister, Patrice Trovoada, supported his campaign.
In the first round of the election, Carvalho came in second place. He received 21.8 percent of the votes. The person who got the most votes was former president Manuel Pinto da Costa. Because no one won more than half the votes, a second round was held. In this final round, Costa won with 52.9 percent of the votes. After this election, Carvalho became the vice president of his party, the ADI.
Becoming President
Carvalho ran for president again in the 2016 São Toméan presidential election. This election took place in July 2016. He won the most votes in the first round, getting 49.8 percent. This was very close to a majority, but not quite enough. So, a second round of voting was planned for a few weeks later.
However, the person who was president at the time, Manuel Pinto da Costa, decided not to take part in the second round. He said there were problems with the first election. Because he pulled out, Evaristo Carvalho became the new president. He officially started his job on September 3, 2016.
Many countries around the world praised this election. The United States said that São Tomé and Príncipe showed its strong belief in democracy. They called the country a "beacon of democracy" for others.
Later Life and Passing
Evaristo Carvalho finished his term as president in 2021. He passed away on May 28, 2022. He was 80 years old. He had been ill for some time.
