The President is the leader of São Tomé and Príncipe, an island country in Central Africa. This article tells you about the people who have been President since the country became independent in 1975. The first President was Manuel Pinto da Costa, who started his job on July 12, 1975. The current President is Carlos Vila Nova, who took office on October 2, 2021.
Presidential Term Limits
Since 2001, the President of São Tomé and Príncipe can only serve two terms. Each term lasts for five years. This rule is part of the country's Constitution. Miguel Trovoada was the first President for whom these term limits applied.
