Carlos Manuel Vila Nova was born on July 27, 1959. He is a politician from São Tomé and Príncipe, a country in Africa. He is currently the fifth president of his country. He started this important job on October 2, 2021.
Before becoming president, Mr. Vila Nova worked as a government minister. He was the Minister of Public Works and Natural Resources from 2010 to 2012. Later, he served as the Minister of Infrastructure, Natural Resources and the Environment from 2014 to 2018. These roles were part of governments led by Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada.
In 2021, Carlos Vila Nova ran for president. He was the candidate for the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) party. He won the election on September 6, 2021. He received 58% of the votes. He won against Guilherme Posser da Costa. A court officially confirmed him as president on September 14.
About Carlos Vila Nova
Carlos Vila Nova was born in Neves. This city is on the northern coast of São Tomé Island. In 1985, he finished his studies in telecommunications engineering. This means he learned how to design and manage communication systems. He studied at the University of Oran in Algeria.
After his studies, he returned home. He became the head of the computer department for the government's statistics office. In 1988, he started working in the tourism industry. He became a sales manager at Hotel Miramar. This was the only hotel in the country at that time.
He was promoted to Director of Hotel Miramar in 1992. In 1997, he became the Director of another hotel, Pousada Boa Vista. He also started his own travel company called Mistral Voyages. Mr. Vila Nova worked in tourism until he began his political career in 2010.
His Political Journey
Carlos Vila Nova first became a minister in 2010. He was the Minister of Public Works and Natural Resources. He served in the government of Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada. This government ended in 2012.
In 2014, his party, Independent Democratic Action (ADI), won the election again. Mr. Vila Nova was then appointed Minister of Infrastructure, Natural Resources and the Environment.
In 2018, he was elected to the National Assembly. This is like the parliament or congress in other countries. It's where laws are made.
Finally, in 2021, his party chose him to run for president. He won the election and became the leader of his country.
Carlos Vila Nova is married to Maria de Fátima Afonso Vila Nova. They have two daughters.
