Life of Patrice Trovoada
Early Life and Education
Patrice Trovoada was born in Libreville, Gabon. His father, Miguel Trovoada, was the President of São Tomé and Príncipe from 1991 to 2001. Patrice was named after Patrice Lumumba, who was the first Prime Minister of Congo. He studied in both Portugal and France.
Starting in Politics
From September 2001 to February 2002, Trovoada worked as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He also advised President Fradique de Menezes on oil matters.
Trovoada is the leader of a political party called Independent Democratic Action (ADI). In July 2006, he ran for president but lost to the current president, Menezes. Trovoada was the main candidate from the opposition and received almost 39% of the votes.
Becoming Prime Minister
On February 14, 2008, Patrice Trovoada became prime minister. President Menezes appointed him after the previous prime minister, Tomé Vera Cruz, resigned. Shortly after, on March 4, 2008, Trovoada visited Gabon for an official trip.
However, his government did not last long. On May 20, 2008, after only three months, his government was removed by a vote in the National Assembly. This vote was started by the opposition party, Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe/Social Democratic Party (MLSTP/PSD). In June, President Menezes asked the MLSTP/PSD to form a new government. They chose their leader, Joaquim Rafael Branco, to be the new prime minister.
Later Terms as Prime Minister
After the 2010 parliamentary election, Trovoada became prime minister again on August 14, 2010. He stayed in office until December 13, 2012, when his government lost its majority in parliament.
But in the 2014 parliamentary election, Trovoada's Independent Democratic Action party won a majority of seats. They secured 33 out of 55 seats in the National Assembly. Because of this, he was appointed to lead a new government once more. He served as prime minister until 2018.
Recent Political Role
Patrice Trovoada became prime minister for the fourth time in November 2022. However, on January 6, 2025, President Carlos Vila Nova removed Trovoada and his government from office. The president mentioned Trovoada's long absences and his government's struggles to solve various problems. Trovoada stated that his dismissal was not legal.
