Early Life and Education
Jorge Bom Jesus was born on July 26, 1962, in Conceição, a part of the Água Grande district in São Tomé and Príncipe. When he was young, he traveled to Europe to study.
He earned degrees in French and Portuguese literature from the University of Toulouse in France. He also completed a master's degree focusing on Portuguese and African literature. Later, he studied at the University of Porto in Portugal, where he specialized in teaching French and Portuguese languages. He also holds a special doctorate degree in public administration from the University of São Tomé and Príncipe.
Career and Political Journey
Before becoming Prime Minister, Jorge Bom Jesus had many important jobs. He worked as an advisor to the Minister of Culture and Information. He was also the Director General of Education and Training. He led the National Library of São Tomé and Príncipe. For many years, he worked as a teacher.
Between 2008 and 2010, he served as the Minister of Education and Culture. From 2012 to 2014, he was the Minister of Education, Culture, and Science.
Jorge Bom Jesus has been involved with the MLSTP-PSD political party since 2006. In 2011, he was chosen as the party's vice-president. In 2018, he was elected as the president of the party. He is known for being a calm and fair leader within his party.
During the election campaign, many people thought he was quiet. However, he surprised everyone by leading his party to a strong second place. Many believed his leadership was a big reason for the party's success.
Becoming Prime Minister
Even though his party came in second, other parties did not want to work with the winning party. This created a problem in forming a government. So, the MLSTP-PSD started talking with other parties like the MDFM-PL, PCD-GR, and UDD.
They formed a special team, or "coalition," to lead the country. This was a new kind of partnership for São Tomé and Príncipe. President Evaristo Carvalho officially appointed Jorge Bom Jesus as Prime Minister on November 30, 2018. He took office a few days later, on December 3, 2018.
When he became Prime Minister, he said one of his main goals was to fight against corruption. In his first speech as Prime Minister, he spoke in Forro Creole. This was the first time a head of government had done this, connecting with many people.
