Leonel Mário d'Alva was born on July 22, 1935. He is a politician from São Tomé and Príncipe, a country in Africa. He played a big role in his country's history.
He served as the prime minister of São Tomé and Príncipe from December 21, 1974, until July 12, 1975. This was a very important time because São Tomé and Príncipe gained its independence from Portugal on July 12, 1975.
Early Political Roles
After independence, Mr. d'Alva continued to serve his country. From July to December 1975, he was the Minister of Economic Co-ordination. This job involved helping to manage the country's economy.
From late 1975 to 1980, he was the President of the National Assembly of São Tomé and Príncipe. The National Assembly is like the country's parliament, where laws are made. He also served as the foreign minister from 1975 to 1978. This role meant he represented São Tomé and Príncipe to other countries.
Leading the Country
In 1991, São Tomé and Príncipe held its first democratic elections. Leonel Mário d'Alva was again elected as the President of the National Assembly. He also served as the acting president of the country for a short time, from March 4 to April 3, 1991.
Founding a Political Party
Mr. d'Alva helped start a political party called the Democratic Convergence Party – Reflection Group (PCD–RG) in 1991. He led this party for many years. Political parties are groups of people who share similar ideas about how the country should be run.
