Amager Bakke (which means "Amager Hill" in Danish), also called Copenhill, is a very special building in Copenhagen, Denmark. It's not just a power plant; it's also a fun place for sports! This amazing building turns trash into energy for the city.
It stands tall at 85 meters (about 279 feet) and you can easily see it from downtown Copenhagen. Amager Bakke opened in 2017. It took the place of an older power plant nearby. This new plant helps Copenhagen reach its goal of having very low carbon emissions.
One of the coolest things about Copenhill is its roof. It has a dry ski slope, a hiking trail, and even a climbing wall! These fun parts opened in December 2018. Lots of people visit every year to enjoy these activities. In 2021, Copenhill was named the World Building of the Year.
How Amager Bakke Works
Construction on Amager Bakke started in 2013, and it officially opened on March 30, 2017. Building this unique facility cost about $670 million. Every year, the plant is designed to burn 400,000 tons of municipal solid waste, which is basically everyday trash from homes and businesses.
The building was designed by a famous group called Bjarke Ingels Group. They made the roof into a giant slope. This slope is used all year round as an artificial ski slope. You can also hike up the side of the building. There's even a huge climbing wall on the outside. This climbing wall is 80 meters (about 262 feet) tall, making it one of the tallest permanent climbing walls in the world!
Making Energy and Keeping it Clean
Amager Bakke is a "waste-to-energy" plant. This means it burns trash to create both electricity and heat for homes and businesses. It can produce different amounts of electricity and heat depending on what the city needs.
This plant is known for being very clean. It uses special filters and technologies to clean the air that comes out. For example, it reduces harmful sulphur by 99.5% and other gases like NOx by about 95%. It also cleans out other bad chemicals. Because of this, many people say it's one of the cleanest trash-burning plants in the world.
There was even an idea for the chimney to release its exhaust in cool "smoke" rings. These rings would be made mostly of water vapor, not actual smoke. This would make the plant's chimney a fun sight to see!
