Amalie Claussen's Early Life and Schooling

Amalie Claussen was born on November 9, 1859, in a place called Ugilt, near Hjørring, in Denmark. Her father, Henrich Wilhelm Claussen, managed forests, and her mother was Ane Hedevig Cortsen. Amalie grew up near the village of Børglum, close to Børglum Abbey, where her father worked.

From a young age, Amalie loved art. She started drawing pictures of the countryside around her when she was only eight years old. When she was 14, her father passed away. This inspired her to write poetry. She collected her poems in a book called Gisninger (which means Conjectures). In this book, she wrote about her thoughts on life and religion. She finished her education at a special college for women teachers in Copenhagen.

Her Career as a Photographer

In the mid-1880s, Amalie Claussen opened a school in Frederikshavn. But soon after, she traveled to Vienna to study painting.

Later, she became very interested in photography. In the mid-1890s, she returned to Denmark and opened her first photography studio in Brønderslev. Then, in 1897, she moved her studio to Skagen.

In Skagen, Amalie took many photos. She captured pictures of the people who lived there and also the many visitors who came for summer holidays. She also took beautiful landscape photos of Skagen and the areas nearby. These pictures showed her great artistic skill.

Working in a quiet part of Denmark, she did all the photography work herself. This included developing the photos and even framing them. Amalie Claussen worked as a full-time photographer until 1929. After that, she retired and moved back to Frederikshavn, where she lived in a house by the coast. She passed away there on January 4, 1950.
