Amanda Eunice Cheatham (born Peele) was an important American biologist. She was born on January 10, 1903, and passed away on April 10, 1978. She made history in 1939. She was the first woman of color to present her research paper to the Virginia Academy of Science.

Her Early Life and Studies

Amanda E. Peele was born in Jackson, North Carolina. This was on January 10, 1903. She finished Northampton County Training School in 1923.

She then went to Hampton Institute. There, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1930. Amanda won a special fellowship. This was from the General Education Board. It helped her continue her studies.

In 1934, she earned a Master of Science degree. This was from Cornell University. Her master's paper was about Trapa natans. This plant is also known as water caltrop. At Cornell, she learned from famous scientists. These included Arthur Johnson Eames and William J. Hamilton, Jr. She also studied with Albert Hazen Wright.

Her Career as a Teacher

In 1930, Amanda Peele became a teacher. She was hired as an assistant professor at Hampton Institute. She taught biology there. She continued teaching until she retired in 1972.

She was also a leader in other groups. In 1941, she was a director. This was for the National Association of College Women. In 1970, she received a special award. It was the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award. This award recognized her excellent teaching.

From 1970 to 1977, she led the National Hampton Alumni Association. She was its president.
