Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Amangu are an Indigenous group of people. They are part of the larger Yamatji people. They come from the mid-western part of Western Australia.

Amangu Language

Early records help us understand the Amangu language. In 1865, R. J. Foley wrote down some Amangu words. Later, in the 1880s, Roger Goldsworthy also collected words. These lists help us learn about their language.

Amangu Country

The Amangu people lived on a large area of land. It was about 26,160 square kilometers (10,100 square miles). Their main area was around Champion Bay and the Chapman River.

Their land stretched from near Geraldton in the north. It went down towards the Hill River. Inland, it reached places like Mullewa, Morawa, and Carnamah. The southern border is not fully clear. It is thought to have been just north of Moora.

Amangu History

Scientists have found old evidence in a place called Yellabidde Cave. This cave is near Leeman. The findings show that people lived in Amangu territory a very long time ago. They were there as early as 23,000 years ago. This discovery means people lived along the Perth-Geraldton coast much earlier than once thought.
