Moora is a town in Western Australia, about 177 kilometers (110 miles) north of Perth. It's located in the Wheatbelt region, which is known for farming. In 2021, about 1,755 people lived in Moora.

History of Moora

Moora became an official town in 1895. It was an important stop on the Midland railway line, which connected towns like Moora to Walkaway.

Major Floods in Moora

Moora has experienced some big floods over the years.

The 1932 Flood

In 1932, very heavy rain caused the town to go underwater. More than half of Moora was covered by about 90 centimeters (3 feet) of water. Roads and railway lines were washed away, making the town isolated. After the water went down, a thick layer of mud was left everywhere. Farmers in the area also lost their crops and animals.

The 1999 Floods

In March 1999, a big flood hit Moora again. This happened because of ex-Tropical Cyclone Elaine. The Moore River overflowed its banks, and about 1,000 people had to leave their homes. Just as the town was getting back to normal, another heavy rainstorm in May of the same year caused yet another flood.

Moora's Economy

Moora is the biggest town in the Wheatbelt region between Geraldton and Perth. It's also the third largest overall, after the coastal towns of Dongara and Jurien Bay. Moora offers many important services and facilities. These include banks, schools, shops, and places for fun activities. There are also health services like a pharmacy, dentist, doctors, and a hospital.

Around Moora, people grow many different crops. These include wheat, barley, canola, oaten hay, and lupins. Farmers also raise sheep, cattle, and pigs. About 15 kilometers (9 miles) north of town, there is a mine that digs up silica. Moora is also a special place where farmers bring their grain to be collected by Cooperative Bulk Handling.
