The Moora Important Bird Area is a special place in Western Australia. It's a big area, about 685 hectares (that's like 1,700 football fields!), located around the town of Moora. This town is in the wheatbelt region, which is a farming area in the southwest of the state. Moora is about 175 kilometers (109 miles) north of Perth, the capital city. Most of this important bird area is on private land.

Why Moora is an Important Bird Area

This area has been named an Important Bird Area (IBA) by an organization called BirdLife International. An IBA is a place that is super important for bird conservation. It means the area provides a safe home for many birds, especially those that are rare or endangered.

Protecting Endangered Black Cockatoos

Moora is very important because it is home to up to 60 breeding pairs of the Short-billed Black Cockatoo. These amazing birds are an endangered species, which means there are not many of them left in the world. Their numbers are getting very low, and they need our help to survive.

The Short-billed Black Cockatoo is a large, striking bird with black feathers and white patches on its tail. They are known for their loud calls and for eating seeds from native plants.

Home to the Western Corella

The Moora Important Bird Area also supports a group of Western Corellas. These birds are known as a "restricted-range" species. This means they only live in a small, specific part of the world. The Western Corella is a type of white cockatoo that is smaller than the black cockatoos. They are often seen in groups, feeding on the ground.

Nesting Spots for Rare Birds

The boundaries of this special bird area are set by places where these cockatoos can build their nests. These nesting spots are found along two road reserves and right within the town of Moora itself. Having safe places to nest is crucial for these birds to reproduce and for their populations to grow.
