About Amaranta Gómez Regalado

Amaranta Gómez Regalado was born in 1977 in a Zapotec village. This village was near the border of Guatemala. When she was a teenager, she chose the name Amaranta. She picked this name after reading a famous book called One Hundred Years of Solitude. This book was written by a Colombian author named Gabriel García Márquez.

Her School Days

During high school, Amaranta studied languages and theater. She went to school in Veracruz, a state in Mexico. After that, she traveled to many different states in southern Mexico.

A Personal Challenge

In October 2002, Amaranta was in a car accident. Her left arm was badly hurt and had to be removed.

Changing Official Documents

In 2015, Amaranta was able to change her birth certificate. This allowed her to update other official papers, like her passport. This was possible because of new rules in Mexico City. These rules made it easier for people to change their official documents to match who they are.

She later studied social anthropology at the University of Veracruz. She studied there from 2011 to 2016.

Working for Change

When Amaranta was 25 years old, she became well-known around the world. She ran for a seat in the Federal Congress in the 2003 elections. She was a candidate for the México Posible party. Even though she did not win a seat, her running for office was a big step.

Important Recognition

There is a school in Santiago, Chile, named after her. It is called the Escuela Amaranta Gómez Regalado. This shows how much her work is valued.
