Amblypygi are fascinating creatures often called whip spiders or tailless whip scorpions. They are a type of arachnid, which means they are related to spiders and scorpions. Don't worry, they are completely harmless to humans! Unlike true scorpions, they don't have a tail or venomous sting. Their name, 'amblypygid', means "blunt rump," because they lack a tail.
Amblypygi belong to a large group of animals called Arthropods. This group includes insects, crabs, and spiders. Within arthropods, they are part of the Chelicerata subphylum. Scientists have identified about 155 different species of Amblypygi. These species are grouped into 5 families and 17 genera.
You can find Amblypygi all over the world, especially in warm, wet places. They live in tropical and subtropical regions. Many species are nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. During the day, they like to hide in dark, damp spots. You might find them under logs, tree bark, stones, or leaves. They really prefer a humid environment.
