Ambo Mineral Water is a popular brand of bottled water. It comes from natural springs in Ambo Senkele, a place near the town of Ambo in central Ethiopia. This water is special because it has natural bubbles, just like soda!

People in Ethiopia love Ambo Mineral Water. It has been bottled since 1930, making it one of the oldest bottled mineral waters in Ethiopia. Since 2017, a company called Coca-Cola Beverages Africa has owned Ambo Mineral Water S.C.

History of Ambo Water

Ambo Mineral Water has a long history, starting in 1930. Even the last emperor of Ethiopia used to visit the springs to drink this water. Local people have always thought the water was special. They even called it "holy water."

Many believed it had healing powers. Some said it could help with digestion or ease problems like rheumatism. Farmers long ago noticed their lost cattle drinking from these springs. This made them realize the water might be unique.

Where Ambo Water Comes From

Ambo Mineral Water comes from a thermal mineral spring. This means the water is naturally warm and full of good minerals. It contains natural calcium, magnesium, potassium, and bicarbonates. It also has carbon dioxide, which gives it its natural fizz!

The water flows from a volcanic fissure, which is like a crack in the Earth from a volcano. It then runs down a stream in a mountain area. The water is collected in Ambo Senkele, Ethiopia. This place is about 130 kilometers (about 80 miles) from Addis Ababa, the capital city.

Ambo Water Today

In 2009, a company called SABMiller bought Ambo Mineral Water. They invested a lot of money in 2011 to make the bottling plant more modern. After these upgrades, the factory could bottle 40,000 glass bottles every hour! Before, it could only bottle about 12,000 bottles per hour.

Later, in 2014, Ambo Mineral Water became part of a bigger plan. SABMiller PLC and SouthWest Development joined with Coca-Cola. This led to the creation of a new company called Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA). Ambo's website says that CCBA officially bought the company in 2017. Today, Ambo Mineral Water and East African Bottling Share Company are "sister companies" under CCBA.

You can even take tours of the bottling factory to see how the water is prepared!

Ambo Mineral Water is not just sold in Ethiopia. It is also sent to many other countries. These include Kenya, South Africa, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, England, Sweden, the United States, and Toronto, Canada.

The water comes in different bottle sizes. You can find it in 330 ML, 500 ML, 750 ML, 1000 ML, and 2000 ML bottles. The bottling plant works all day and night, 24 hours a day. In Ethiopia, a bottle might cost around US$0.30 in shops. It costs more in restaurants and hotels. In places like New York City, it can be sold for around US$6 per bottle.

Ambo Water Products

For a long time, Ambo Mineral Water was only sold in glass bottles. But more recently, it also started to be sold in plastic bottles. Around November 2014, new products were introduced. These included Ambo flavored water, which came in different tastes. There was also Ambo Lite, which had fewer minerals and less fizz.
