Reverend Ambrose I. Lane Sr. (born February 12, 1935 – died September 14, 2010) was an American activist. He worked hard to fight against poverty and was a popular radio talk show host. He also shared his ideas as a commentator on politics and religion.

Who Was Ambrose I. Lane Sr.?

Ambrose Lane was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. He earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Pittsburgh in 1963. This education helped him understand people and society better.

His Work in Radio

Ambrose Lane was famous for his radio show called "We Ourselves." This program aired on Pacifica Foundation’s WPFW-FM in Washington, D.C. It started in 1978 and continued until his death. He also hosted a similar show on XM radio, called The Power.

Lane used his knowledge to help cover important events. He reported live on U.S. Supreme Court hearings. He also provided daily live coverage of the Persian Gulf War for six weeks.

From 2005 to 2006, he managed the Pacifica Foundation. This foundation runs several radio stations. He also managed other groups that helped people.

Standing Up for What's Right

Ambrose Lane was not afraid to speak his mind. In 1982, he wrote an important essay called "Where Are Your Responsible White Leaders?" It was published in The Washington Post.

In his essay, he wrote about how Black people often carried a big responsibility. He felt they were working hard to keep freedom and democracy alive in America. He also wrote that Black people were tired of being blamed unfairly.

A Publisher and Author

Ambrose Lane was involved in publishing many books and pamphlets. He was a founder, owner, editor, and publisher of the Buffalo New York Challenger newspaper. This paper served cities like Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, New York.

He also helped create publications for the National Center’s Department of Research and Development. These included The National Center Reporter and New Spirit. His most recent book, “For Whites Only? How and Why America Became A Racist Nation,” was published in 1999.

Awards and Recognition

Ambrose Lane received the Media Excellence Award from the United Black Fund. He earned this award for "20 Years of Outstanding Service to the Community Through Superb Journalism." This shows how much his work in media helped his community.
