Amelia Earhart's Family Connection

When Amelia Rose Earhart was young, her family told her she was related to the famous pilot Amelia Mary Earhart. Later, when she was in college, she hired someone to check her family history. This person said they found a "distant common ancestry" from the 1700s. However, another check in 2013 found no clear family connection.

Learning to Fly

Amelia Rose Earhart took her very first flying lesson on June 2, 2004. She earned her private pilot license flying a Cessna 172 airplane. In December 2011, she flew across the United States. She recreated a flight that the original Amelia Earhart had made. Amelia Rose flew from Oakland, California to Miami, Florida in a Cirrus SR22 plane. This flight helped her complete her training to fly using only instruments.

Awards and Recognition

In July 2013, Amelia Rose Earhart received a special honor. She was given the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award. This award is from the Chamber of Commerce in Atchison, Kansas. It is given to women who continue the adventurous spirit of the first Amelia Earhart.

Flying Around the World

Amelia Rose Earhart achieved an amazing goal. She flew all the way around the world in a single-engine airplane. Her co-pilot for this journey was Shane Jordan. They worked with the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver.

The Global Flight Path

Their journey started by flying across the United States. Then, they headed south into the Caribbean Sea. After that, they flew to northeast Brazil and across the South Atlantic Ocean. Their route continued over the continent of Africa and then the Indian Ocean. Finally, they crossed the Pacific Islands and the Pacific Ocean. They returned to California after their long trip.

The Journey Details

Amelia and Shane began their flight on June 26, 2014. They took off from Oakland, California, in a Pilatus PC-12 NG plane. During their trip, they made 17 stops. They flew for a total of 108 hours, covering about 24,300 nautical miles. They landed safely back in Oakland on July 11, 2014.

Scholarships Announced Mid-Flight

On July 9, while flying over Howland Island, Amelia made an exciting announcement. Howland Island is the place the original Amelia Mary Earhart was looking for when she disappeared in 1937. Amelia Rose used Twitter to share the names of the first girls to receive flight training scholarships. These scholarships were from her Fly With Amelia Foundation.

A Record-Breaking Pilot

Amelia Rose Earhart is the second youngest woman to fly around the world. The first woman to achieve this was Richarda Morrow-Tait.
