About the Américaine River
Where Does the River Start?
The American River begins at a place called Perthuis Lake. This lake is about 1.9 kilometers long. It sits at an elevation of 224 meters above sea level.
The start of the river is located:
- About 2.4 kilometers northeast of Clair Lake.
- About 6.7 kilometers west of the village of Sainte-Christine-d'Auvergne.
The River's Journey
From Perthuis Lake, the American River flows for about 11.3 kilometers. It drops about 84 meters in elevation along its path.
- For the first 6.5 kilometers, it flows towards the northeast. It passes through a small, marshy lake. It also collects water from other small lakes and streams, like Lake Écarté and Lake Praxède.
- For the next 4.8 kilometers, the river twists and turns towards the southeast.
The American River eventually joins the Jacquot River. This meeting point is on the southwest bank of the Jacquot River.
From this point, the water flows into the Sainte-Anne River. It then continues for about 55 kilometers until it reaches the St. Lawrence River.
How Did It Get Its Name?
The name "American River" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
