The American Airpower Museum is a super cool aviation museum located at Republic Airport in East Farmingdale, New York. This airport used to be the home of a big airplane factory called Republic Aviation. The museum has a fantastic collection of old airplanes and aviation items. They show off aircraft from many different years of the factory's history.

Inside the museum, you'll find many amazing planes that don't fly anymore, but are still super impressive to look at. These include a Republic F-84 jet fighter, a special RF-84F plane used for scouting, and a powerful Republic F-105 Thunderchief. You can also see the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, which was the last plane made by the factory.

The museum has a great team of volunteers. Many of them used to work at the Republic airplane factory or are veterans from different parts of the military. They love sharing their knowledge! You can even experience what it's like to fly in a real C-47 aircraft. This specific plane actually flew during the D-Day invasion in Normandy during World War II!

Discover the Museum's History

The American Airpower Museum first opened its doors in 1998. Back then, it was called the American Museum for the Preservation of Historic Aircraft. It was started by Jeff Clyman with a grant of $250,000 from the state.

For a while, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had a plan to take down a large hangar. This hangar was built around 1940 and is about 35,000 square feet. The FAA wanted to replace it with a safety area for the runway. However, in 2011, important leaders like Charles Schumer and Steve Israel said that the FAA agreed the hangar didn't need to be torn down. They even said federal money could help move the hangar to a new spot if needed. This was great news for the museum!
