The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) is a group of lawyers and law professors. They focus on immigration law. AILA helps families who want to live in the U.S. They also help businesses find talented people from other countries. Students, entertainers, athletes, and people seeking safety (asylum seekers) also get help from AILA. Sometimes, they offer help for free. AILA is a non-profit group. It gives training and information to its members. It has 38 local groups and many national committees. Its main office is in Washington, D.C..
History

The group started on October 14, 1946. It was first called the Association of Immigration and Nationality Lawyers. Nineteen lawyers and professionals founded it in Manhattan, New York. Many of them used to work for the Immigration Service. They wanted to improve the reputation of lawyers working with immigration. Josh Koenigsberg was the first president.
In 1982, the group opened its main office in Washington, D.C.. It also changed its name to the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
By 1985, AILA had 1,800 members. As of 2017, there are over 15,000 members. They are in 39 local groups across the U.S. and worldwide.
