The American Ranch was once a large 160-acre farm and a place where travelers could stay. It was located in a beautiful area called the American Valley. Today, this area is known as Quincy, California.

What Was the American Ranch?

The American Ranch was more than just a farm. It also had a hotel where people could rest and stay overnight. It was a very important spot in the early days of California.

How It Started

The American Ranch and Hotel was built in 1852. A person named H.J. Bradley founded it. This building was special because it was the very first one in the area made from sawn lumber. Sawn lumber means wood that was cut into planks at a sawmill.

A Place for Government

The American Ranch played a big role in history. When Plumas County was officially created in 1854, the American Ranch served as the county seat. This means it was the main place where the county's government business was done.

Who Owned It?

From 1856 to 1876, a man named James Haun owned and ran the 160-acre ranch. He managed all the farming and hotel activities during those years.

American Ranch Today

Today, the old hotel building is still standing. You can find it at 355 Main Street in Quincy. Because of its important history, the American Ranch has been recognized as a California Historical Landmark. This means it's a special place that helps us remember the past.
