Amina Claudine Myers was born in Blackwell, Arkansas, in 1942. She was mostly raised by her great-aunt, who was a teacher, and her great-uncle, who was a carpenter and played several instruments.
Early Life and Music Lessons
Amina started taking piano lessons when she was about four years old. She even took lessons at Sacred Hearts Catholic School. When she was seven, her family moved to Roosevelt, Texas. She continued her piano lessons there. She also tried violin, but she decided to focus on the piano.
College and Moving to Chicago
Amina studied music education at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas. After college, in 1963, she moved to Chicago. There, she taught music at an elementary school. She also took more classes at Roosevelt University. In Chicago, she worked with other musicians like Sonny Stitt. She was also part of the AACM, a group that helped creative musicians. In the late 1960s, she added "Amina" to her name.
Moving to New York and Touring
In 1976, Amina moved to New York City. She started writing more music, even for Off-Broadway shows. She kept performing and recording as a pianist and organist. Around 1978, she began touring in Europe. She played with the Lester Bowie Quintet and his New York Organ Ensemble.
