The Name Amity

What Does "Amity" Mean?

The name "Amity" has a special meaning. It comes from an old word that means friendship or peace. The story behind the name goes back many years.

In the late 1600s, some Swedish settlers came to this area, near a place called Douglassville. They later connected with German settlers in New Hanover. A road was built between New Hanover and Germantown. Along this road, the word "Amity" started to be used for a certain spot.

The people living there chose this name to show how well they got along with the Native Americans. In 1693, the Swedish settlers wrote a letter to their home country. In the letter, they said, "We live in great amity with the Indians, who have not done us harm for many years." This shows how peaceful their relationship was.

Because of this good relationship, the Swedish settlers who moved further up the Schuylkill River called their new home "Amity." It was a way to remember the friendship they shared.
