Ammannia senegalensis, also known as copper leaf ammania, is a type of flowering plant. It naturally grows in western Senegal. You might often find it growing like a weed in fields where rice is grown.
This plant has a stem with leaves that grow in pairs, one across from the other. When they first appear, the leaves are green and quite wide. As they get older, they become narrower and turn a reddish color. If the plant gets a lot of bright light, its leaves become even redder! There are different types of this plant, but scientists are still learning about them. These types mostly look different in their leaf shape and color.
The flowers of the copper leaf ammania are small and hard to see. They grow from the spots where the leaves meet the stem, especially on parts of the plant that are above the water.
Growing Copper Leaf Ammania
If you want to grow Ammannia senegalensis well, it needs lots of bright light. With the right conditions, these plants can grow very quickly. They can even grow in water, as long as it's not too deep. They also grow much better if you add extra carbon dioxide (CO2) to the water.
The best water for them is soft and a bit acidic. However, these plants are generally tough and can adapt to most normal water conditions. To help them grow strong and healthy, you should add a good amount of iron to their water, especially if you're growing them in an aquarium.
It's easy to make more of these plants! You can simply cut off a piece of the stem and push it into the gravel or sand at the bottom of your tank. This is called propagation.
