Amod Cassimjee was an important businessman and community leader. He was born in Surat, India, in 1871. He moved to South Africa in 1895 and settled in Pietermaritzburg. There, he built successful businesses and helped his community.

Amod Cassimjee's Business Journey
Amod Cassimjee started his business career by joining his brother, Suleman. They worked together for a few years in a company called Suleman Cassimjee & Co. This business began in Winterton, Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Starting His Own Business
Later, Amod Cassimjee started his very first own business in a place called Kranskop. After that, he returned to Pietermaritzburg. There, he became a partner in a new company, Amod Mahomed & Co.
Becoming a Sole Owner
In 1913, the partnership ended. Amod Cassimjee then took over the business completely. He ran it under his own name. His company became very well-known on Upper Church Street. It served many African customers and also had a special section for European clients. Amod Cassimjee even started making shoes! People in the city knew him as "Khandalemvu."
Community Leadership and Support
Amod Cassimjee cared deeply about his community. He was especially interested in helping the Muslims and the wider Indian community in South Africa.
Supporting Education
He played a big part in starting the Muhammadan Oriental School. This school is now supported by the government. Amod Cassimjee was always ready to help any effort that would benefit his community. He even laid the foundation stone for the Mohammedian Oriental School, which was connected to the Upper Church Street Mosque.
His Later Years and Passing
Amod Cassimjee passed away on May 16, 1951. He was 80 years old. He was buried in the Mountain Rise Cemetery in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
