The Amory House is a special old house located on the side of Mount Monadnock. You can find it on a private road near Old Troy Road in Dublin, New Hampshire. This house was built between 1898 and 1899. It is a great example of a Dutch Colonial Revival style summer home. The Amory House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 because of its historical importance.
What is the Amory House?
The Amory House sits on what used to be the large Amory family estate. This land goes up the northern side of Mount Monadnock. It is between Old Troy Road on one side and the mountain's Pumpelly Ridge on the other. You reach the house by a private road that winds through the old estate.
How Does the House Look?
The house is a big, sprawling wooden building with two and a half stories. It has many unique roof shapes called gambrel gables. The outside is covered with clapboard siding. Some of the gables have special half-round windows, each made of three parts. One gable even has an oriel window, which sticks out from the wall. There is also a screened porch with round columns. This porch offers a beautiful view to the west. A building that used to hold carriages, called a carriage house, stands nearby. It has a similar style to the main house.
Who Lived in the Amory House?
The Amory House was built in 1898 and 1899. It was designed by John Lavalle, an architect from Boston. The house was built for William Amory, a businessman from Boston. He passed away in 1900. His wife, Louise, later built a much larger Italian-style house nearby in 1910-1911. Only the ballroom of that bigger house still exists today. Louise then rented out the Amory House.
Some very important people lived in the Amory House over the years. These include Albert J. Beveridge, who was a United States Senator. A Senator helps make laws for the country. Another famous person who lived there was Henry Adams, a well-known historian. Historians study and write about the past.
