Amos is a small, unincorporated community located in the northwest part of Vernon County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially governed by its own city or town rules.

Where is Amos?

This community is found about 1.5 miles east of the border between Missouri and Kansas. It's also about three miles north-northwest of Stotesbury. You can find Amos about 16 miles northwest of Nevada. The community sits right on the banks of Duncan Creek. This is about one mile north of where Duncan Creek joins the Little Osage River.

A Look Back: The History of Amos

Amos was officially planned out on a map, or "plat-ted," in 1894. This happened when the railroad lines were extended to reach this spot. The community got its name from Amos Nickerson, who was a local merchant in the area. A post office was opened in Amos in 1893. It served the community until 1931. In 1925, records show that Amos had 31 people living there.
