Biography

Amos Cassiòli was born in a town called Asciano, Italy. He studied art at the Sienese Academy of Fine Arts. His teacher there was Luigi Mussini.
A special grant from Grand Duke Ferdinand IV of Tuscany helped him. This grant allowed Amos and another artist, Angelo Visconti, to study in Rome. In late 1860, Amos Cassiòli moved to Florence. Florence became his main home, but he always stayed connected to Siena.

Cassiòli was known as an excellent painter of portraits. He also created large historical paintings. One famous work is the Battle of Legnano (painted between 1860 and 1870). You can see it in the Galleria di arte moderna at Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Another important painting is Il giuramento di Pontida (The Oath of Pontida), finished in 1884. This painting is in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena.
Between 1884 and 1886, he painted frescoes in the Sala del Risorgimento. This room is also in the Palazzo Pubblico. His frescoes show scenes from the battles of San Martino and Palestro. He also painted an altarpiece for a church in Casole d'Elsa. He worked there with another artist, Antonio Ridolfi.
Amos Cassiòli also painted many classical subjects. Many of these paintings are now in the Museo Cassioli. This museum is in his hometown of Asciano. The museum also has a self-portrait he painted of himself.
