The Amos Lawrence House is a historic home located on Richville Road in Manchester, Vermont. It was built around 1840. This house is a wonderful example of a building style known as Greek Revival. After being used as a rental property for many years, it was carefully restored in the 1980s. The house was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
About the Amos Lawrence House
The Amos Lawrence House is found in the middle of Manchester. It sits on the east side of the Battenkill River. The house is located between railroad tracks to the west and Richville Road to the east. It's just south of where Richville Road meets Green Mountain Road.
What Does It Look Like?
The house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It is five bays wide, meaning it has five sections across its front. The roof slopes down on two sides, a style called a side-gable roof. It has two brick chimneys inside the house. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding.
The front of the house faces east. It has a main entrance in the center. This entrance is set back a little. It has tall, narrow windows on either side, called sidelight windows. The opening for the entrance has flat, decorative columns called pilasters. These pilasters hold up a decorative band called an entablature. Above that is a projecting cornice, which is a fancy molding. The corners of the building have narrow trim pieces. There is also a wide entablature just below the roof's edge.
A one-and-a-half-story section extends from the back of the house. This part is called an ell. It might even be older than the main part of the house.
Who Was Amos Lawrence?
The Amos Lawrence House was built around 1840 by a man named Amos Lawrence. He bought about 70 acres of farmland in this area in 1826. The main house was built later, around 1840. The ell, or back section, might have been Lawrence's first home on the property.
The Lawrence family owned the property until 1879. After that, it was owned by different people who didn't live there. They used it as a house to rent out. By 1983, the house was in very poor condition. It was separated from the farmland at that time. The house then received a complete restoration. Today, it has two separate living units inside.
