Amos Marcus Gailliard Jr. (born September 26, 1928 – died April 8, 2014) was a brave American soldier. He was the son of a famous musician, Amos Gailliard. He started his military career as a private and worked his way up to become a brigadier general. This is a very high rank in the army.

Early Life and Family
Amos Gailliard Jr. was born in New York City. He was the youngest of three children. His parents were Anna Govan and Amos Gailliard Sr. His two sisters, Julia and Jessie, called him "Junnie."
After college, he married Barbara Jean Miles. She was from Harlem, New York. They adopted three children: Michael, Cathy, and Donna. Besides his military work, Amos Gailliard Jr. also worked as a Project Manager for IBM. He was also a leader in the Zeta Zeta Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
A Life in the Military
Amos Gailliard Jr. graduated from South Carolina State University in 1951. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. His impressive military career led him to be listed in an encyclopedia about Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He first became a Master Sergeant before he became an officer.
Rising Through the Ranks
Brigadier General Amos M. Gailliard Jr. served in the United States Army. He was on active duty during the Korean War. Later, as a Major, he joined the New York National Guard. This is a part of the military that helps states during emergencies.
He became the commander of the 14th Group of the New York Guard. Under his leadership, this group grew bigger and became a brigade. In August 1995, he was promoted to brigadier general in the New York Guard.
Important Missions
His group provided important support operations. They helped at the site of the TWA Flight 800 disaster. This was a very serious plane crash. His team helped with the recovery efforts.
Awards and Recognition
Amos Gailliard Jr. received many honors for his service. In 2005, he was given a Distinguished Alumnus award. This award came from his old university, South Carolina State University. In 2008, he presented the Order of Saint Maurice award to another officer.
Amos Gailliard Jr. passed away on April 8, 2014. The 77th Infantry Division honored him at the Fort Totten Chapel. This showed how much they respected his long and dedicated service.
