Natural Surroundings
The land around Amsterdam is mostly used for farming. You will see many fields and small creeks. Camp Creek is to the west of the town, and Valley Ditch is to the north. Even though it's near the huge Gallatin National Forest, there aren't many trees right in this area.

Amsterdam is in the beautiful Gallatin Valley. From here, you can see the Bridger Mountains to the north. To the south, you can enjoy views of the Gallatin Mountains.
A Look at Amsterdam's Past
Amsterdam was first settled in 1911. It was originally named Walrath, after a farmer named A. J. Walrath.
How Amsterdam Got Its Name
The Northern Pacific Railway built a train line through the area. They changed the town's name to Amsterdam. This was because many Dutch settlers had moved there. These settlers arrived in the 1890s. They came to grow a special type of barley. This barley was used to make malt for the Manhattan Malting Company nearby.
