About Amy Miller's Life and Work
Amy Miller has always been interested in helping others and making a difference. In 2002, she was involved in a protest in Ottawa. This protest, called the Seven Year Squat, aimed to highlight the long wait times for people needing affordable housing. Activists used an empty building to draw attention to the issue of homelessness.
Miller explained her reasons for participating, saying, "How much do we tolerate direct action as a society? We're going to get so upset about people taking over an abandoned house and using it, and in the same blink of an eye, we tolerate how many homeless people sleeping in our streets every night?" This shows her passion for social justice.
In 2007, Amy Miller decided to focus on making documentary films. She moved to Serbia for a short time to make a film called Outside of EUrope. After returning to Canada in 2008, she continued making documentaries and later created her own production company, Wide Open Exposure.
Miller also spoke out about how people were treated during the 2010 G20 protests in Toronto. She shared information with journalists about concerns regarding how women were handled by police officers. Her testimony was even mentioned in the Canadian Parliament by a Member of Parliament, Maria Mourani.
