Amy Nnenna Okonkwo (born on August 26, 1996) is a talented basketball player. She plays as a forward for the Ligue Féminine de Basketball club Bourges. Amy was born in the United States. However, she proudly represents Nigeria in international games.
Playing Basketball Professionally
Amy started her professional basketball journey in Spain. She played there for three seasons. In 2022, she moved to France to join the Saint-Amand team. During her first year in France, she played very well. She scored about 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds per game.
After playing in Israel and Mexico, Amy joined Landerneau Bretagne Basket in 2023. She became the top scorer for her team. She averaged 17 points and 7 rebounds per game. Her great play helped her team stay in the league.
Playing for Nigeria
Amy is a key player for the Nigerian national basketball team. She played for Nigeria at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. There, she averaged 2.7 points and 1 rebound per game.
She also took part in the 2021 Afrobasket tournament. Her team won the gold medal! Amy averaged 9.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in that tournament.
In 2023, Amy represented Nigeria again at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket. This event was held in Kigali, Rwanda. She was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. Amy was also chosen for the All-Star Tournament team of 2023. She was the only Nigerian player to achieve two "double-doubles" in the tournament. A double-double means getting double-digit numbers (10 or more) in two different stats, like points and rebounds.
College Basketball Career
Before turning professional, Amy played college basketball. She started at USC for one season. Then, she transferred to TCU. She played for the TCU Horned Frogs from 2016 to 2019. During her time at TCU, she was recognized for her skills. In 2018, she was named the Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year. This award goes to a player who often comes off the bench but makes a big impact.
