Amy Sol (born 1981) is an American artist. She was born in Korea and now lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. Amy Sol is known for her unique style of painting. She often paints on wood panels. She uses the natural grain of the wood as part of her artwork.
Amy Sol's art style is sometimes called "Pop Surreal" or "Lowbrow" art. This means her paintings often mix everyday things with dream-like or strange elements. It's like a blend of cartoons and surreal art.
The reason (is) the wood really helps me a lot, and I've sort of become addicted to using wood panel. It's become a really important part of the whole piece -- all together -- it holds the whole piece together. The grain of the wood usually is the start of the motion; the flow. The wood always reminds me to keep things moving. When you look at wood grain, sometimes -- and you can almost feel the sense of something alive, of course it was once alive, but that imprint; the foot-print of it is still there. When I paint right on the wood it influences the colors I use. It reminds me to keep things really natural.
Amy Sol explained why she loves painting on wood. She said the wood grain helps her create movement in her art. It also reminds her to use natural colors. She feels the wood's natural patterns guide her creative process.
What Her Art Looks Like
Amy Sol's paintings often show young girls in magical nature scenes. These scenes include strange trees, mist, clouds, and rolling hills. The girls are usually with oversized or fantasy creatures. These animals seem like special friends or partners, not just pets.
Her paintings use soft, muted colors like pastels and light grays. This gives her art a dreamy, calm feeling. Her style is inspired by many things. These include folk art, modern illustrations, manga (Japanese comics), and modern design.
Inspirations
Amy Sol has mentioned other artists who inspire her work. Two of these artists are Range Murata and Kay Nielsen. Their styles have helped shape her unique artistic vision.
