Amy X Neuburg has studied music and language. She earned degrees in voice from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and in linguistics from Oberlin College. She also studied electronic music at Mills College. There, she learned from famous musicians like Pauline Oliveros.
Amy creates unique music by combining her singing and speaking voice. She uses electronic loops and samples. These are short recordings of sounds or music that she can play repeatedly. She triggers them with electronic drums. Her songs mix different music styles. These include opera, rock, Medieval music, and world music.
For ten years, Amy led an experimental band called Amy X Neuburg & Men. She often uses her voice and digital instrument sounds in her live performances. She also writes music for groups of musicians. She has worked with the Paul Dresher Ensemble and the Del Sol String Quartet.
From 2005 to 2010, Amy led a group called the Cello ChiXtet. She formed this group to perform her special song collection. It was called The Secret Language of Subways.
